Building upon the empirical study of single-family houses and their residents from the research-based teaching format Half Measures - Das Einfamilienhaus zur Disposition in the summer semester of 2023, the winter semester of 2023/24 will see the practical application of this knowledge in design. In this context, a thesis within the B.Sc. Architecture program will be offered, focusing on the single-family house.

Together, we aim to explore how partially unused and abandoned spaces in 'empty-nest' homes can be revitalized as part of a socio-ecological transformation. We will examine how the current form of housing can be supplemented, expanded, or altered. This concept of redensification of existing buildings will be approached from various angles: legislative and/or economic frameworks such as property or building law, typological studies, structural analysis and design interventions at the individual building level, and finally, programmatically in terms of potential reallocations. This will encompass an expanded concept of housing that goes beyond the scale of the individual building.

In the research-based teaching format Half Measures - Das Einfamilienhaus zur Disposition, living practices in eight single-family houses were empirically studied through interviews, visualizations (drawings/diagrams), and model photography. Interviewees provided detailed descriptions of their living experiences, focusing on the rooms, furnishings, fittings, and surroundings of their houses. They also discussed the significance of living in a single-family house and their (future) desires for change.

Against this backdrop, students in the thesis group will formulate individual questions for a design study within the existing building stock. Up to five students will base their B.Sc. Architecture thesis on the findings of this research. The thesis group's structure enables students to utilize previous studies' insights and questions, benefit from expert input, and engage in idea exchanges within the group. Participation in the preceding seminar is not a prerequisite.

We are delighted that, aligning with the interdisciplinary approach of the research workshop, the thesis projects will be overseen by various professors of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität. Professors Dr. Jasper Cepl, Mona Mahall, and Andreas Garkisch will serve as the primary supervisors for these projects. Supervising these projects within the research workshop presents a unique opportunity to apply empirical knowledge to design. Additionally, it facilitates potential synergy effects through exchanges with other researchers.

In the summer semester of 2023, at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Studies, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar we conducted the seminar Half Measures - Das Einfamilienhaus zur Disposition as part of the sub-project Weiterentwerfen. This seminar focused on investigating in housing practices in single-family houses. The objective was to gather insights for potential reallocations, transformations, and densifications of the existing stock, in light of the increasingly underused space within these houses. An empirical case study, undertaken in collaboration with students through a research-based teaching format, provided an exploratory foray into this new research field. The students showcased their case studies at the summaery, the annual exhibition of the Bauhaus-Universität, in July 2023.

The Single-Family House for Disposition – Empirical knowledge and designing further

In Germany, there are 16 million single-family homes, each with one or two apartments (Destatis, 2022, p.16). To grasp the vast scale of these existing buildings, consider this illustrative calculation: If each house accommodated five individuals, the 83 million residents of Germany could theoretically all have a roof over their heads. This scenario highlights a significant potential for transformation within the realm of urban planning. However, such a transformation can only be achieved in collaboration with the residents.
